One of the aims of the UK Government's Making Space for Water programme is to provide greater clarity for both the public at risk of flooding or erosion and professional bodies involved in flood and coastal erosion risk management.
At present, flood risk from rivers and the sea is mapped to inform the public and authorities. However, limited information is available on the risk from coastal erosion.
In 2006, Halcrow were commissioned by the Environment Agency to undertake the National Coastal Erosion Risk Mapping project. This project aims to map coastal erosion risk, whilst taking account of the influence of current coastal protection and management activities. The project is due to be completed by the end of 2008.
This paper focuses on the innovative techniques being implemented to enable local expert verification of the prediction tools used in this nationally important project.
