Beach levels within Seagrove Bay, Isle of Wight, UK have fallen throughout the Bay by the order of lm over the past decade. The continuing loss of beach would result in instability in the coastal slope and the loss of some domestic properties. This paper describes the development of a sustainable solution for coast protection within the Bay. Various ID and 2D numerical models were used for the analysis and design optimisation of the scheme. A shingle beach with two offshore breakwaters was identified as providing the best overall balance between performance and cost. A series of sensitivity tests were undertaken to investigate the robustness of the selected scheme which demonstrated that it was not unduly sensitive to the climatic and other physical changes that may occur at the site.
