Preston Dock, situated adjacent to the Ribble estuary (NW of England), suffers persistent cyanobacterial blooms. As a result, the Dock cannot be developed to its full potential as a recreational public amenity. Atkins was commissioned by the Environment Agency to investigate factors controlling cyanobacterial blooms in Preston Dock, as part of the Improving Coastal and Recreational Waters (ICREW) project. Following a monitoring programme, a bespoke water quality model was developed for the Dock to test potential management options. Modelling results suggested that the preferred strategy must target more than one, and ideally all, nutrient sources: inflows from the estuary, fluxes from the sediments and the existing store in the water column.
