This paper summaries lessons learnt whilst preparing two shoreline management plans, for North Kent; the review of the open coast ‘Isle of Grain to South Foreland’ SMP, commissioned by Canterbury City Council and the Medway Estuary and Swale SMP, commissioned by the Environment Agency respectively. This paper briefly outlines the experiences gained in the preparation of both SMPs, specifically drawing on:
Recently revised Procedural Guidance (2006);
Technical differences;
Stakeholder engagement; and,
Project management.
A key objective of this paper is to highlight areas of adaptation, which have the potential to assist in the preparation and collaboration of subsequent second generation SMPs, particularly those which will be ran concurrently.
