Transportation, Water and Telecommunications Department, the World Bank Washington

To apply a technology which is appropriate to the requirements, conditions and circumstances prevailing for a particular project would seem to constitute a basic principle of engineering which is undisputed. However, the interpretation of appropriateness varies among engineers and other professionals and politicians. The discrepancy increases when concept and actual application are compared in relation to worldwide needs, particularly in developing countries. The subject of appropriate technology is, therefore, of great concern to the World Bank Group and to all agencies and organizations involved in the development of Third World countries.
