Chapter 7: Time and Academic Multitasking – Unbounded Relation Between Professional and Personal Time

Different concepts have been advanced to illuminate the developments and transformations in contemporary societies. Regardless of their categorisation, all of them signal a new economic and social order associated with changes in technologies, and in the relation human–machine, as well as in the labour–capital relations and also in humans’ relationship with time (Unger, 2019).

‘Knowledge economy/society’ has been a term widely used to classify contemporary societies translating the way knowledge has been assumed as a relevant mean of production. Nevertheless, Roberto Unger (2019) calls the attention to the fact that the way knowledge change the productive paradigm is still insular and undeveloped. The use of knowledge as the most advanced practices of production is restricted to few global companies and it is not inclusive, being instead excluding and superficial.
