Conclusion – Children and Youths’ Migration in a Global Landscape: Lessons Learned and Future Directions

This edited volume put children and youth at the center of a global migration landscape, with empirical work and policy analyses from Mexico, the United States, Italy, Hungary, Thailand, and India. Individual migratory trajectories have increasingly become multidirectional, transient, and often characterized by multiple journeys in the era of globalization (Bukus, 2016; Veale & Donà, 2014). Children and youth migration provides a unique angle to understand the shifting landscape of global migration and mobility: issues such as schooling, belonging, and career aspirations are more relevant to them than anyone else, as they are in the formative years of their life. In this concluding chapter, we focus on three main themes found in the articles: (1) a sense of belonging and intersectionality; (2) sites of negotiating, maintaining, and constructing identities; and (3) precarity, uncertainty, and aspiration.
