Application of optimization methods to determine transit network parameters is becoming a prominent feature in contemporary public transit planning. Analytical, mathematical programming and simulation models have been used for this purpose. Analytical models have an advantage over the other types in the planning stages, as they do not require much detailed data and are also efficient in computational time requirements. It is against this background that this paper aims to provide a rail-planning tool that will help transport planners and decision-makers. The termini, and hence the length of an urban rail line, are important rail network parameters that are also required for planning and design of other related services and future land-use developments.
