First page of Impact of New Technologies in Travel Surveys

Transport and infrastructure planning and traffic control that give due regard to the actual needs and also to social and environmental concerns have to rely on valid and detailed information on such factors as settlement structure and transport services, as well as the actual travel behaviour and traffic conditions. While the required data on settlement structure and transport services are generally readily available, this is normally not the case with details on the space-time behaviour of the population. These data, which reflect individual travel behaviour, are of substantial relevance for the transport planning process and can be obtained in two different ways: one is based on observation (without involvement of the road user or traveller), while the other starts from direct surveys among the target group.
