J. P. COWAN, formerly Acer Consultants Ltd I have three general points which arise from the experiences described by the Authors.

A marked feature of all experiences described is the need for careful preparation for, and scrupulously detailed implementation of, applications of advanced technology in the field of progress control. An illustration of this is the care needed in the definition of the actual process to be controlled and an understanding in depth of how that process has been controlled in a manual context. Papers 11 and 13 both draw attention to the need to set realistic targets for process control schemes and to understand the deficiencies of engineering plant and the practical operation of such plant.
