M. J. PARKER, Thames Water Utilities I would like to ask Mr Hurcom and Dr Peters two questions under a general heading of reliability.

Firstly does Mr Hurcom believe that the network providers, such as Mercury, will be able to provide secure and reliable networks to provide for the needs of industry in the coming years and what role does he visualize communication engineers playing in this respect?

Secondly, would Dr Peters like to comment regarding the notorious problems of reliability associated with instrumentation in our industry, in particular regarding the treatment of sewage. What are industry and the R&D establishments doing in this respect?
