This paper considers the application and interpretation of the Standard Penetration Test in the wide variety of soils and rock encountered in the UK. In particular, attention is focused on what information the SPT can provide on the strength and stiffness of these materials. Correlations are provided for overconsolidated sands and gravels, normally consolidated sands, overconsolidated clays, weak rocks and Chalk. The importance of $QV in the interpretation of the strength of granular materials is demonstrated, as is the importance of strain dependency in the understanding of stiffness in all materials.
