The cone penetrometer has been used widely for site investigations associated with foundation design. The range of cone penetrometers now available, plus those developed specifically for environmental investigations, provides tools for detailed studies at contaminated sites in which the lateral and vertical extent plus the site potential to generate and transport contamination can be assessed.
