Tokyo Gakugei University (TGU) was formally established as a teacher education university in 1949 by merging four normal schools or teacher training schools in Tokyo, and is now one of the largest teacher education universities in Japan. TGU is located in Koganei-shi, in the western part of Tokyo, and is composed of one faculty (Faculty of Education), in which there are two courses, that is, the Teacher Training Course (Teacher Training Division) and the Liberal Arts Course (Liberal Arts Division). The former course has four sub-courses (programs), and the latter has five, as shown in Fig. 1.1 In the Teacher Training Course, students have to obtain at least one teaching certificate in order to graduate from the university. The enrollment numbers of each sub-course are presented in Table 1.
