The purpose of the workshop was described as follows:

The workshop was designed to explore the challenges and benefits of different types of longitudinal surveys in the light of recent experience. It was attended by 18 people1 participating from six different countries. In addition, the workshop was provided with four papers for presentation, together with a further six posters that were relevant to the discussions of the workshop.

The workshop began with an open discussion to set the context of the participants' concept of longitudinal survey methods. The group noted that the common element was:

There were at least four different types of longitudinal survey identified initially including retrospective surveys, continuous surveys, panels and multiday surveys.
