Opening address

The order of words in the title of this Conference could be read as meaning that the subject matter is how to get more civil engineers into boardrooms. Perhaps in part it is, and I am not decrying it as an objective, but it is certainly not the main point.

The aims of the Conference are to explore the need for stimulating and improving good management practice in civil engineering, to consider the adequacy of the education and training of civil engineers in management skills, and to consider the extent to which the expectations of both employers and employees are met.
