MR J. W. POIROT, Paper 10 Training of civil engineers The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recommends numerous management subjects to be included in the curriculum taught by university professors. However, where curriculum restraints prevent the addition of these courses, a speaker's guide is available for practising engineers to visit student groups and explain management subjects through their personal experiences in engineering management. Continuous interface between undergraduate students and practitioners results in a

stronger engineering profession and an appreciation of the management skills needed to bring a project to fruition.

Management training can also be accomplished through continuing education programmes and seminars offered by private enterprise. However, it is not easy to determine how beneficial these courses are. Much time can be misspent attending expensive seminars which provide only marginal benefit to the engineer. Often the courses are intended for industrial corporations and therefore are not beneficial to engineers in government or private consulting practice. Nevertheless these seminars do fill a need and provide an avenue for continued management training of engineers.
