Session 2 Theme 1. Land which has been restored to use after surface (opencast) mining.
For restored land the problems are
- how extensive were the pits?
- how deep were they?
- how were they filled, and with what?
- how long does it take before surface subsidence reduces below a given rate?
- is it likely that all or part of the fill is in unstable equilibrium?
- could a future gradual or sudden change in the environment induce unexpected and unwelcome subsidences?
- what loads can be safely carried?
Paper 6 is on "A study of urban restoration of surface mined land in Western Canada" and is by Schulz, Thomson and Sonnenberg.
