First page of Bridging Perspectives: The Epistemic Links Between Mastery-Focused and Culturally Inclusive and Responsive Learning Environments

Tribute to Dr. Stuart A. Karabenick

Our fondest shared memories of Dr. Stuart Karabenick are the intellectually stimulating experiences we had as we worked together on a Spencer-funded project designed to explore middle school students' experiences in culturally diverse learning environments. The whole-hearted collaboration and support we received from the schools and school districts for this project was in no small measure a consequence of the close relationship that Stuart maintained with the schools and the community. His care and empathetic understanding of the issues that students of color and immigrant students faced in schools was evident not only to all of us on the project, but school principals and district administrators recognized this as well. Even as the research team discussed the need for theoretically grounded research conducted with rigor, he never let us forget that education research is all about building relationships with schools and working on issues that schools, teachers, and students consider most pressing.
