The delegates' workshop will be held in the session immediately following lunch on 16th September. The aim of the workshop is to illustrate how the information gleaned from the preceding lectures can be used to make design decisions in a practical context. The delegates will be set a design exercise in which basic decisions on lining type, tunnelling method and ground treatment must be made. These decisions will draw upon as many of the preceding sessions as possible.
At the introduction before lunch, delegates will be given basic geotechnical data and other relevant infformation on a typical tunnel project. The delegates will then be split into small working groups. Over lunch, and in the hour immediately after lunch, these groups will discuss and agree upon their chosen solutions, referring to the preceding lectures and their own experience. The groups will then reconvene and a spokesperson from each group will report back on the decisions taken and their rationale.
