INTRODUCTION
United Transport International, in conjunction with local partners, currently operates conventional bus services in the major cities' of three African countries namely Zimbabwe, Kenya and Malawi. Further it had previously provided similar services in Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda and Nigeria thus leading to a unique breadth of experience on the Continent. The statistics quoted in this paper are drawn from these operations but the comments are purely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect U.T.I's position. Whilst examples are taken from all our current operations the Kenyan experience is examined in greater depth as perhaps being most relevant to future developments in Africa.
