6. The place of the bus in public transport

SYNOPSIS

The paper details the needs of the various kinds of traffic

that the bus operation has to meet which cannot always be

considered in watertight compartments. The size of the fleet

is determined to a large extent by the peaks, and mention is made of the need to find suitable off-peak traffic. The requirements of pleasure travel are considered and the

influence it has on the design of the vehicle, bearing in mind

that the more standardization is possible, the less is the overall cost of operating the fleet. The bus has a future which may need to be much more flexible.
