A review of the activities of the Institution of Civil Engineers in promoting the need for the
strategic planning of infrastructure and of the role of the Infrastructure Planning Group.
"Infrastructure" is now a buzz word and infra
structure investment is almost synonymous with
the cry for further investment in capital works
and repair and maintenance. There is widespread
concern about the declining standards of infra
structure in the UK through lack of adequate
investment which has also produced a deep
recession in the construction industry.
The Institution of Civil Engineers first initiated their dialogue on infrastructure in 197^ not on the need for more investment but on the need for strategic planning. These early discussions arose from concern at over investment in 1972/73, a concern which has been borne out by the utter collapse in public sector investment since that time.
