In order for practicing consultants to continue to be of value in the gig economy, it is important to understand that digital platforms operate as complex systems with various functions that deviate from traditional laws of business. This deviation creates challenges and opportunities for management consultants to position themselves as valuable to the ethical advancement of digital business in the gig economy. Development techniques that have proven efficient for traditional businesses might not be feasible for a digital company with a decentralized business model. For example, incentive programs might look different for independent and contingent workers who set their own hours, and the unconventional freedoms offered to contingent workers certainly set a new precedent for expectations from an employment-driven perspective. These types of problems will require updated strategies and creative solutions from a technology-centered management consultant. Therefore, this chapter uses complexity theory to emphasize the need to adapt and expand change models for use in the gig economy.
