Given the growing number of Chinese and Chinese-American populations in the United States, the current study aims to examine recent changes in Chinese folktale picture books since Cai’s (1994) study. We examined 31 newly identified Chinese folktale picture books published from 1959 to 2020. The data showed that folktales still outnumbered other genres. Discussion includes stereotypical images and gender roles, shifting perspectives on traditional values, and a newly proposed theme, relationships with nature.
