Chapter 6: Faith and Work Integration within For-Profit, Nonprofit, and Public Sector Organizations

Religion is important to the majority of the people in the United States. A 2017 Pew Forum survey reported that 53% of respondents selected “very important, and 26% selected “somewhat important” when asked about the importance of religion in their lives (Pew Research Center, 2015). It has also been established that religion plays a significant role in developing the values and world view of its adherents (Saleem, 2019). Social psychology has long discussed the importance of values on workplace behaviors (Maio, & Olson, 2003; Oh et al., 2013). A logical argument ensuing from this information is that since (1) religion is important to the majority of people, (2) religion teaches values, and (3) values influence work behavior; then, religion has a significant impact on workplace behavior. Coupled with the reality that healthy adults spend the majority of their waking hours at work (Sadd, 2014), it would be safe to assume that faith and work integration (FWI) is not an unimportant topic of study
