Chapter 9: Community-Based Research as an Approach to Experiential Learning in Methodology of Research: A Case Study

This chapter describes a unique experiential learning opportunity for student researchers engaged in a community-based research project that culminated with a number of successful outcomes. From the perspective of experiential learning, two graduate education students benefited from an authentic research experience that began with initial brainstorming about research design, incorporated leadership development opportunities, and culminated in peer-reviewed and stakeholder presentations, as well as co-authorship on a publication of findings in a peer-reviewed international journal. From the perspective of service, the community partner gained valuable data published in a peer-reviewed venue providing the first tangible evidence of the value of their work. The data support grant applications and continuing program development for the agency. From the perspective of mutuality of benefit, as the faculty research mentor and pro bono principal investigator, I gained a publication with student co-authors and, along with the students, was able to apply my particular expertise (i.e., research methodology) to a social justice cause.
