This chapter examines gender roles during the 1930s on one college campus. Women took on new responsibilities on campuses and in the nation at the same time that a previous symbol of masculinity, that of military defender of the country, fell out of favor. The history of the women’s rifle club, the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), and the student peace movement reveal locally constituted changing concepts of gender.
