The development and successful execution of large blended courses requires adherence to best practices across a variety of course delivery systems. As a foundation, clear definitions of the expectations associated with “blended learning” are considered. Such definitions assist in the identification of appropriate contexts for the implementation of large blended courses. Successful implementation begins at the point of course design and employing evidence-based standards to design features. Appropriate integration of instructional tools and the development and disclosure of sound course policies provide support for design. Given the foundation of sound course design, successful execution depends largely on faculty preparation and training in best practices for course facilitation.
