If a genuine transformation within any business is to occur, the leadership of that organization must be both willing and able to provide the energy and the power to enable change. Warren Bennis often observes instead men and women suffering under the burden of a high position, still proving themselves, still suffering from battle fatigue, overworked, compulsively intervening, and becoming, ultimately, burned-out victims of the Peter Principle.
In the following article, Bennis discusses how leaders can overcome the obstacles of isolation, cynicism, routine, inertia, and turmoil. He demonstrates how they can instead fuse work and play in a way that makes people feel significant, values learning and competence, and makes work more exciting.
