Widely known as an educational pioneer and reformer, Lowell Milken is chairman of the Milken Family Foundation (MFF), which he co-founded in 1982. Under his leadership, MFF has become one of the most innovative private foundations in the U.S., creating national programs in K–12 education and medical research as well as funding and working with more than 1,000 organizations around the world committed to the interests of young people, K–12 education and medical research. Among his contributions to strengthening education, Mr. Milken conceived both the Milken National Educator Awards and the Teacher Advancement Program (TAP). As a businessman, Mr. Milken is chairman of London-based Heron International, a worldwide leader in property development, and co-founder of Knowledge Universe, a company focused on meeting the lifelong learning requirements of both individuals and businesses. Named by Worth magazine as one of the 15 most generous living Americans, Mr. Milken is the recipient of numerous awards from such organizations as the National Association of State Boards of Education, the Horace Mann League, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. A product of California’s public school system, Mr. Milken graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California at Berkeley in 1970, where he was recognized with the School of Business Administration’s Most Outstanding Student Award. He was awarded his law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, with the distinctions of Order of the Coif and UCLA Law Review. He and his wife of 29 years, Sandy, have four sons.
