Chapter 5: Web-Based Learning and Transactional Distance Theory

This chapter examines transactional distance theory in the context of Webbased learning. The theory is described in terms of its key components of dialogue, structure, and learner autonomy. A short literature review of previous transactional distance research is included, and key research questions in online learning are presented. The chapter concludes by offering Web course developers, online moderators, and instructors guidelines for the successful development of student-centered online learning environments. Throughout this chapter, the phrases “Web-based learning” and “online learning” will be used interchangeably.
