For more than a decade, higher education institutions in this country—and more recently around the world—have been utilizing Inclusive Excellence (IE) as a guiding framework to advance their diversity equity and inclusion commitments. However, the continued existence of student activism on college campuses suggests the results of these efforts have been mixed at best. Part of the reason traditionally White institutions (TWIs) have not experienced more sustainable success is the manner in which TWIs have operationalized IE which has decentered a focus on race and racism as a central component of their diversity and inclusion efforts (Tuitt, 2016, 2022). Specifically, they have been unable to avoid three traps related to:
