Despite women’s ability to successfully handle multiple responsibilities, they remain underrepresented in top-level positions within the workforce. This qualitative study investigates the barriers women face in pursuing a career in Tyrol, Austria, and examines their perceptions of these obstacles in relation to their professional growth and work–life balance. The findings reveal a disparity in gender representation, indicating a need for greater gender equality across all organizations. Results indicate that to address these issues, institutional initiatives should be implemented, such as affirmative action policies, auditing existing systems, providing on-site quality childcare, and incorporating workplace flexibility and job-sharing opportunities. Furthermore, traditional leadership values and societal perceptions must be addressed before gender equality in the workplace can truly be realized. Accordingly, institutional support structures should be adaptable to diverse needs, and society should strive to provide comprehensive institutional support, particularly for vulnerable groups like single mothers.
