The following document utilizes theoretical and practitioner concepts of critical race theory (CRT) and culturally responsive physical education (CRPE) as tools to inform and analyze a pedagogical approach in implementing a physical education program. Building upon the CRT tenet that emphasizes the value in the experiences of people of color, this study expands upon the importance of culturally responsive curriculum in the core U.S. subject areas, including physical education. Journal excerpts, teaching notes, and observations are utilized to explore the use of the African Brazilian martial art of Capoeira as a central activity in gym class to encourage movement and foster discussions about race. From the experiences as a teacher, the document argues that CRT and CRPE can be used to engage youth in critical conversations about race while supporting student learning in physical education programs.
