In the early 1990s, the office of the editor of Middle School Journal was in a small ground floor office in the Kilpatrick Education Center on the campus of Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia. John Lounsbury, dean emeritus of the School of Education, had moved into this office upon his early retirement so that he could devote more time to middle level education.

John had taken on the responsibility of the journal while he was dean, and he single-handedly cranked it out with the help of his supportive secretary, Nellie Gilbert. He hand carried the edited drafts to a Macon, Georgia printer who assembled galleys and returned them to him for his final edits.
