Chapter 31: How Do We Thank Oxygen?: Reflecting on John Lounsbury

For decades, every time I arrived at the annual conference for the National Middle School Association (now the Association for Middle Level Education), John Lounsbury was there to bid me hello. He called out to me from across the exhibit hall floor by name, offered a word of encouragement for my work, and then introduced me to several new middle school teachers with whom he had just been speaking. In addition, after most columns I wrote for the Middle Ground Magazine (now, AMLE Magazine), he sent a, “Way to go,” email, each one including a specific reference to something in the writing, proof that he actually read and considered its content.
