Narrative research was used to explore the pedagogical philosophies and practices of Black parents who homeschool their school-aged children. Sandra is one of three participants from a much larger study in that research and is the focus of this chapter. Sandra, a stay-at-home mother of two children, homeschools her two children who were ages 9 and 11 at the time the study was conducted. Given the research surrounding race and education in the United States and the growing number of homeschoolers, it is important to understand how the philosophies and pedagogical practices of African American parents who homeschool are influenced by the pervasiveness of race in traditional schools. It is equally important to emphasize the strong value in understanding homeschooling as it is juxtaposed with traditional schooling.
