This chapter focuses on the observations of four Grade 7 teachers in Ontario who shared about teaching mathematics through their reflections on their own and one another’s teaching. The main research questions were: What do teachers think are significant components in teaching? What do they value in teaching? Three layers of noticing are presented, including (1) teachers noticing student actions within their own classrooms, (2) teachers noticing teacher actions as they sit with colleagues and observe episodes of teaching, and (3) researchers noticing what teachers notice and pay attention to. Data consisted of video-recorded discussions of four teacher participants as they watched and discussed videos of their own teaching and of each other’s teaching. Through a thematic analysis of the data gathered, we created a concept map that presents these teacher practices, what the teachers seemed to value, and the teachers’ goals in teaching mathematics. The teachers’ overarching goal that emerged through their conversations was promoting mathematical thinking and understanding.
