This paper describes the use of precast concrete piles driven through up to 20m of chalk fill into intact chalk. Ultimate shaft and end bearing resistances in the chalk are derived and compared with available design techniques. Dynamic testing and analysis is shown to give good prediction of ultimate end bearing resistance provided that the pile is displaced sufficiently during the test. However, it is concluded that ultimate shaft resistance in chalk cannot be reliably obtained from dynamic tests. The use of a bitumen slipcoat is shown to be very effective in reducing shaft friction.
