Neoliberalism has been the most dominant ideology in the shaping of human society over the past 30 years. This chapter considers the roots of neoliberal theory and analyzes its agenda for public education, which we argue demands its termination. In doing so, we define three distinct stages of the neoliberal transformation of public education and offer the cases of Philadelphia, PA; Douglas County, CO; and the country of Chile as archetypes of the neoliberal transition.
