Article 110 of Morocco’s 2000 Charter for Educational Reform Policy promotes multilingualism in Moroccan education. Historically, the languages of instruction in Moroccan schools were Arabic, and later French under French Colonial Rule. Indigenous languages such as Tamazight have not been formally taught in Moroccan schools. The policy includes Tamazight as a formal language of instruction and opens the possibility of the use of other languages for science and technology instruction. While Morocco’s 2000 Charter for Educational Reform promotes multilingualism, this chapter explores how the English language is factoring into the idea of multilingualism in Moroccan schools and society.
