First page of Interactive Digital Storybooks and the Role of Parents in
                                Supporting Young Children’s Mathematics Development

A father is reading an interactive mathematics storybook called Monster Music Factory (MMF; Ginsburg, Cerf, & Creighan, 2016) with his 4-year-1- month-old son, Eddy.

As Zoller tells her friends to help her count the number of drums, the father pauses the story and Eddy points to each drum, one at a time.

Interactive storybooks range in complexity, with little uniformity in format (Guernsey, Levine, Chiong, & Severns, 2012). Some contain few technological enhancements and resemble print books, but displayed on tablet devices. Others have many digital affordances, such as animation, sound effects, and games, which distinguish them from paper books. In this chapter, we focus on highly interactive storybooks (also called digital storybooks, electronic storybooks, or e-books) with various technological features.
