some people in school have it better than others,

nobody in school has it very good,

children grow up to become adults in school—

sometimes i’m human in school,

sometimes i’m something else,

but i’ve spent lifetimes growing up in school,

i’ve been so many people

in human relation with adults,

in human relation with children,

sometimes i’m something else,

there’s a distant, heavy melody

in school—

adults know the song by heart,

so they speak confidently, a teacher says something and then it’s true,

administrators, parents, politicians,

one adult after another,

one thing instead of another until children are dying in school—
