Global citizenship education is one of the most contested and debated models in the citizenship education paradigm. On the one hand, global citizenship education falls victim to deficient teacher education curricula, lack of knowledge and motivation among educators, or falsely understood patriotism. On the other hand, teachers who are interested in incorporating global perspectives in citizenship education lack pedagogical knowledge and incentives to do so. This chapter demonstrates how global citizenship can be introduced through the framework of social justice. The author argues that by emphasizing the examples and ideas of social justice and equality in courses such as world history, U.S. history, geography and history of the world, world civilizations, economics, or civics, teachers can develop multiple loyalties, perspective consciousness, and multicultural awareness, essential components of global democratic citizenship.
