“You ever had one?” he spit out, slumped in his seat, a defiant challenge in his eyes.

Ah, Jason’s turn for offense. Sixth period. Exhausted. I realized I still had two more periods before the end of the first day of my teaching career. As typical, the class began with roll call. Halfway through the alphabet I called out, Jonathan Johanson. Immediate laughter provided the first clue that the class was in the know—and that the new teacher had some learning to do.

“Enlighten me, please. What did I say wrong?”

Several students responded in unison, “His name is Jason, not Jonathan.”
