The right response to self‐made people who talk smugly about being graduates of the “University of Life” is perhaps to say: “Aren’t we all?” Most learning, whether useful or not, takes place in work and social situations. The EU has goals relating to the creation of lifelong learning and a knowledge‐based society. To achieve these goals, the organizations where people work must enable them to learn continually. Systems and a culture must be created to support lifelong learning.
