It is exemplary how these authors employed a culturally responsive research approach to recognize culture as central to the research process and employ both the researchers and the researched cultural perspectives as a method for research design, data collection, and data interpretation. Also, this case study is an example of how purposeful sampling can be used to include populations not traditionally represented in STEM research. The sample represented a diverse demographic, geographic, and cultural context in five PREP locations. This is a case that also demonstrates the benefit of establishing relationships with a history of trust, which allowed the researchers to collaborate with site directors to find students who matched their research populations criteria needed to understand and provide a voice to students who are usually underrepresented in STEM fields. Also included in this case study are the terms gender minorities to represent the trans population and URM, which is another example of underrepresented minorities.
