That passage comes from The National Educational Technology Plan in a section called “The Practice of Connected Teaching.” This is a clear indication that the U.S. Department of Education recognizes the affordances of the social web for professional learning. In fact, August 2012 was officially designated by the U.S. Department of Education as the first ever Connected Educators Month (CEM). CEM included a week of web conferences, the launch of an online book club, and announcements about new online communities for educators around the world. This was all hosted and supported by the U.S. Department of Education in collaboration with various partner organizations.
