Being one of eight children reared in public housing by a single parent with one bathroom to share between us, I learned at a young age to be prepared so that when my chance to complete needed tasks arrived, I could take advantage of the opportunity. Chance, opportunity, and preparedness, thus became the tenets that kept me grounded and became the guidelines by which I patterned my life. Although I had little control over the timetable by which opportunities would present themselves to me, my responsibility was to be prepared for their inevitability, so that I would be able to take advantage of any and all possibilities.
